If I had to choose my favorite city in the United States, New Orleans would easily take the top spot. The only city I leave out of the discussion is New York City because that is where I am from, and I know I am incredibly biased. In my eyes, New York is in a category of its own. But if I remove hometown loyalty from the equation, New Orleans wins without much competition.
I have traveled to different places throughout the United States and every city has its own personality. Some stand out for their architecture, others for entertainment or scenery. New Orleans somehow combines all of those things while adding a soul that feels impossible to replicate. The city has a rhythm that you can almost feel while walking down the street.
The first time I visited New Orleans, I expected good food and fun nightlife because that is what everyone talks about. I did not expect to immediately feel connected to the city itself. It has character in every corner. From historic buildings and live music pouring out of restaurants to the energy of the people around you, New Orleans feels alive in a way that many cities do not.
After visiting twice already, I can confidently say this is one of the few places I want to return to every year.
New Orleans Has the Best Food I Have Had in the United States
Food is one of the main reasons New Orleans immediately climbed to the top of my list.

I love trying new dishes and experiencing different styles of cooking whenever I travel. In my opinion, New Orleans wins the debate for best food city in America by a mile.
Creole cuisine is packed with flavor. There is something special about the way spices, seafood, French influences, African influences, and Southern cooking all come together. The result is food that feels rich, comforting, and unforgettable.
No matter where you go in the city, there always seems to be something incredible waiting for you.
One thing I loved about New Orleans is that the city almost feels designed for people who enjoy eating. There are endless dishes to try:
- Gumbo
- Jambalaya
- Po’boys
- Crawfish étouffée
- Beignets
- Red beans and rice
- Muffuletta sandwiches
- Fresh seafood dishes
You could spend an entire week trying different foods and still barely scratch the surface.
Some cities have famous dishes that tourists try once and forget. New Orleans is different. I found myself thinking about meals days later.
The experience also goes beyond just the food itself. Many restaurants and cafés have live music performances happening while you eat. Having incredible food while listening to talented musicians creates an atmosphere that is difficult to beat.
Breakfast was one of my favorite parts of the trip and Café Beignet quickly became a must-visit spot. Starting the morning with fresh beignets and coffee felt like a perfect way to begin the day.
Jazz Is the Heartbeat of New Orleans
It is impossible to talk about New Orleans without mentioning jazz.
This city is considered the birthplace of jazz music and you can feel that history everywhere you go.
Even if someone is not a fan of jazz, I would still tell them to experience a live performance while visiting New Orleans.
There is a huge difference between hearing jazz through headphones and hearing it live while sitting in a restaurant or walking down the street.

You can watch musicians completely lose themselves in their performances. There is passion in every note and every instrument. Seeing that level of energy and emotion in person stays with you long after the performance ends.
One of my favorite things about New Orleans is that live music does not feel reserved for special occasions.
You do not need expensive concert tickets.
You do not need to plan your entire day around an event.
You simply walk through the city and discover performers naturally.
Restaurants, bars, and street corners all become stages.
The city itself almost feels like one giant performance.
Walking Through History in Every Direction
New Orleans is one of the oldest and most fascinating cities in the United States.
Founded in 1718 by French colonists, the city has centuries of history layered into its streets and neighborhoods.
Walking around New Orleans feels different from walking through many modern American cities because the architecture tells stories.
You notice old buildings, balconies, churches, and landmarks that have survived generations of change.
There is also an interesting contrast throughout the city.
You can see old-world influences existing alongside modern restaurants, nightlife, and attractions.
It feels like the past and present are constantly interacting.
Of course, New Orleans has also faced many challenges throughout its history.
Its low elevation and heavy rainfall have made flooding a recurring issue. The city has continually adapted and rebuilt while maintaining its identity.
Another thing visitors should prepare for is the weather.
The heat can be intense, but the humidity is on another level.
If you visit during the summer months, expect to sweat a lot.
The weather can feel overwhelming if you are not used to it, so staying hydrated becomes important.
Bourbon Street Is Unlike Anywhere Else
If New Orleans has a center of gravity, Bourbon Street might be it.
Stretching across twelve blocks, Bourbon Street is one of the most recognizable streets in America.
During the day there is already energy in the area, but nighttime is when things truly come alive.
Crowds fill the streets.
Music plays from every direction.
Street performers entertain tourists.
People move in and out of restaurants and bars.
There is constant movement and excitement.
Some people visit Bourbon Street purely for nightlife, while others go simply to experience the atmosphere.
Even if nightlife is not your thing, it is still worth seeing at least once.
There is something fascinating about standing there and watching everything happen around you.
It almost feels like stepping into another world.
Audubon Park Might Be One of the Most Beautiful Parks I Have Seen
As much as New Orleans is known for nightlife and food, there are also peaceful places where you can slow down.
Audubon Park became one of my favorite discoveries.
The park is beautiful and almost feels like stepping into a painting.

Walking through the park provides a completely different experience from the busy streets of the city.
The scenery is relaxing and there are plenty of places where you can sit and simply enjoy the surroundings.
What I loved most was how easy it was to forget that I was still in a major city.
You could spend an entire afternoon there and completely lose track of time.
Nearby is the Audubon Zoo, which is also worth visiting if you have extra time.
For families or anyone looking for something beyond food and nightlife, it makes for a great experience.
Exploring Art and Bookstores in New Orleans
New Orleans also surprised me with its artistic side.
The New Orleans Museum of Art is worth visiting even before stepping inside because the surrounding area is scenic and peaceful.
Art lovers can spend hours exploring exhibits while enjoying the beauty around the museum grounds.
Another place that stood out to me was Baldwin & Co., a coffee shop and bookstore combination that became one of my favorite stops.
There is something comforting about discovering local bookstores while traveling.
Baldwin & Co. had a welcoming atmosphere and felt like the kind of place where you could spend hours reading or relaxing.
If you visit, signing up for their recommendation newsletter is worth considering.
The Sazerac House Is an Underrated Experience
One attraction that deserves much more attention is The Sazerac House.
The best part?
It is free.
You only need to reserve a spot beforehand.
The experience combines history, storytelling, and cocktail culture in a way that feels surprisingly engaging.
Visitors learn how the Sazerac became the official cocktail of New Orleans while getting a deeper understanding of the city’s history.
You can also sample drinks throughout the experience, which adds another layer of fun.
Even for someone who is not deeply interested in cocktails, it is still worth visiting.
Why I Keep Wanting to Return to New Orleans
I have now visited New Orleans twice, and every visit somehow made me appreciate the city even more.
Usually after visiting somewhere once, I feel satisfied and move on to planning another destination.
New Orleans is different.
The city feels like there is always something left to discover.
Maybe it is a restaurant you missed.
Maybe it is another jazz performance hidden inside a small venue.
Maybe it is a neighborhood you never explored.
The food alone is enough reason to come back, but New Orleans offers far more than great meals.
It has history, music, culture, nightlife, art, and unforgettable energy.
Whether you are someone who loves food, history, live music, nature, or simply exploring cities with personality, New Orleans offers something memorable.
There is a reason people from all over the world continue to visit the Crescent City.
After experiencing it myself, I completely understand why.
